Pretty much. The key difference between a warrior and a soldier is one fight for honor and/or thrill of battle, the other fight to protect.
Having nothing you wish to fight for is a huge liability as a soldier.

It's a quote from Nietzsche (not sure if it's verbatim tough). One good proof of it was the life of Viktor Frankl. Dude survived the Holocaust by making his "why" to see his wife again, therefore enduring the "how" of the Holocaust
