Actually, they had it right. Mokou was crying because she was hungry; the doll being taken was just a catalyst, as it were. The Japanese reflects that with this particular usage of じゃない. (I know it can be confusing, since じゃない can also be used as a positive emphatic.)

And then they grew up.....
