I don't get why a lot of artists choose to upload otherwise gorgeous works in resolutions barely larger than a thumbnail. You'd think they would want people to see their work in all its detail.

They do want people to see it, but they'd also like to make a living off their work if possible, so the high-res options are often a paid version.
