One explanation I've seen (and take this with an unbroken line of salt) is that vampires don't reflect in mirrors because mirrors were backed with silver, a "pure" metal. The CCDs in modern digital cameras are doped semiconductors, and anything but "pure", so they should be able to record vampires just fine.

That being said silver is used in semiconductors and a lot of electronics as it's superior to pretty much every other metal at doing electronics things. It's seeing even more use as time goes on as well cause it's apparently less vulnerable to EMI too.
