Guessing this has to do with Twitter and hes plan on getting rid of the bots.
No idea if the claim is true, but there is claim that due to their changes that embedded media is unable to connect properly which results in like multiple attempts to connect. This in turn is effectively making them DDoS themselves. Is this true? No clue. Does it sound like something so incredibly dumb that they actually could do it? Yeah.
There are two main theories about what’s going on here. One involves the possibility that Elon’s big move before this, the new inability to view Twitter when not logged in, created some sort of technical spiral where Twitter is now effectively DDOSing itself based on how these changes were made. The limitation has nothing to do with scraping and everything with trying to keep the site together while this is addressed, according to Sheldon Chang on Mastadon.
The second theory has to do with Musk, in an effort to cut costs, refusing to pay his bills to places like Amazon or Google who provide essential services for Twitter. These issues suspiciously correspond with past reporting about this area, though follow-ups indicate that Musk eventually at least paid the Google bill. The more likely option is the former, it seems, about the logged-out viewing change badly messing things up.
It all started as a global outage, or as everyone thought.
Read somewhere that it's all about "temporarily" implementing Rate Limits. Backtracked twice by raising the tweet limit. (First, it's 300/600/6000, then raised it to 400/800/8000, then to 500/1000/10000) However, the damage is done.
This caused the platform nigh unusable due to the viewing limits, and a lot of people are leaving en masse. Although some used some workarounds to bypass this rate limit. It's unknown how long it will last though.
Yes, it's annoying. To the point I might consider retiring from social media if it finally goes under. Don't worry, I'll still be here in this site.
Here's a brief summary about what happened. Tldr Elon is a fucking idiot
That imgur post is wrong, the cloud bills were paid more than two week ago. Musk is an idiot and it's hard to follow all his stupidity, but also something the info is just bad.
When I first heard about these limits I assumed this was another means of making everyone have to pay up to get the higher viewing limit.
Do we not have definite reason for why this happened yet or still speculation? I still wonder if this really is a temporary thing as they claim or if this might end up being permanent.
While i won't leave Twitter until it literally burns down, i AM looking any alternatives.
JP artists are flocking to Misskey or Insta so I guess those are going to be the two "main" alternatives... Unless they finally manage to make Pawoo/Mastodon mainstream after years of everyone trying to make it a thing and falling flat.
Do we not have definite reason for why this happened yet or still speculation?
Probably too early for a definitive reason to become known. I imagine in this scenario the only way for a definitive reason to come to light would be through a leak. If Musk is telling the truth, it's hard to believe because of how unreliable a source he's been and the timing. If it's due to a massive system issue, then they'll never openly admit it because it shows gross incompetence or other failings.
