But again, when I look at the Pikachu one... maybe it's not.

The Japanese name is phoneticized "gengaa" (ゲンガー) actually. The "ge" part has more of a long "a" sound. Hence Bulbapedia's "Gangar" romanization

I think Bruce_ofthe_lees was going for a short "a" sound as seen in Ganondorf's name.

Funny thing I noticed:
It takes 2 gameboy cartridges to trade and get a Gengar.
