The 'dinosaur trio' as Japanese loves it was Tyrannosaur (Suicune), Diplodocus (Raikou) and Triceratops.
Though if they made Entei into a Stegosaur it would still kinda makes sense, with the back plates and all.

This is an incredibly stupid design and I already love it so much.

Honestly, I prefer the red one to be T-Rex because he is sorta the leader of this group and got the some muscles on its whole body...

Seeing the blue Suicine T-rex pokemon felt so wrong. I prefer the blue one to be "graceful-looking" dino Suicine…

But Pokémon sure gets creative when it comes to twisting Legendary groups in their designs to something different creature species/designs. But why specifically Legendary trio groups?

I think they're trying to invert the Dogs' ability upside down.

Suicune's base stats is well-suited to be a special tank (high in DEF and SP.DEF) but portrayed as a tyrannid, which is very image of brutal attack power.
Raikou's base stats shows that it's a fragile speedster (high in SP.ATK and SPD) but it gets turned into a sauropods, which is hardly fast or graceful.
Entei's base stats are suited to be a physical attacker (high in HP and ATK), so if we invert that you'd end up as a...speedster tank?

So he would be something that can take hits and move fast? If Dino Crisis has taught me anything, that perfectly describes Triceratops.
