The Japanese don't have "ng" or "l", so Hong becomes Hon and Meiling becomes Meirin.
Also Shanghai -> Shanhai and Cheng -> Chen

Since the translation used hoNG and meiRIN, it's simply inconsistency.

However you spell Meirin's name is all technically correct anyway. It just depends on which Romanization you prefer to see. I myself Prefer "Meirin" over "Meiling". "Meiling" just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
