Am I the only person noticing some symbolism here? Note how there are many pieces, but only one is dead. That is the King while the rest are pawns. Also the pawns are arranged around as though they want to watch.

I think that would make for an awesome and very appropriate story. A shame since this image probably doesn't mean to convey that theme on purpose.

there is a technical variant of chess in wich the the whites have only two bishops and one horse + the king and blacks have only the king and all 8 pawns. The objective of whites is to kill all the black pawns (there are some people who main for checkmate on the black king, very dificult) and the objective of blacks is to make checkmate on the white king.
The main purpose of the variant is to make people use actively the king on battle lacking other peaces (specially the black ones)

Wow, that is a pretty genius-like theory, but after being locked up in a basement for 495 while your sister enjoys the life of a princess above you. I don't blame Flandre for having that type of thoughts.
