Bold and Timid? What? I....those two words don't even go together, and Timid is the LAST word I'd say applies to Marisa.

大胆 can mean bold, daring or audacious, while 小心 means timid or cowardly. In effect, this likely means Marisa is timid at heart, but wears a bold/daring mask.

Isn't going on despite being afraid what we usually call courage?

That would make sense. Marisa is bold, but she's also hard-working and, despite canon, quite deliberate and thoughtful about how she does things -- just not so much about what she does.

Since she's also known as the Black-White Witch, it could be elaborating on how she's a study in contrasts.
