Because he is in denial and hides a fair amount of self loathing and fear behind a demur of cheeriness?

He is also scarred, atl from what has been implied he had a lover which died due to illness, which tends to make a lot of folk that are deep in love pretty... dull to their own feelings in a certain way afterwards? He might have been feeling love towards her, but his conscious mind wasn't really receptive to the notion unless someone straight out punched him in the face with it.

According to an artist that has met him (which also made a comic page about that encounter) and even actively makes ecchi stuff about this story, they asked him about the size difference issue (or well, they asked about Takeda's... size) and his reply was quite something. Though you can take it with a pint of salt, but considering what shiromanta himself has made, I am somewhat inclined to believe that person.
