I'm taking a wild guess and say that the couple is Hansel and Gretel from the fairy tale, all grown and matured. It sounds good to me..

I like how the habit is humans adopting little youkai and fairies, as it seems to have blunted certain not-so cute tendencies in them.

Think about it. Fairies and Youkai of Rumia's type don't ever mature (or at least they don't seem to in gensokoumuten's universe), so they'll be just as cheerful and innocent for each new set of adoptive parents who in turn won't likely live long enough to be troubled by the fact that their kids aren't growing up.
