Ahh, the four gods. I've been waiting for a picture like this.

The Four Guardian Gods of Gensokyo....minus one.

Even though the tiger isn't white, it's pretty epic that this kind of pic finally came.

Yes, one of the guardian gods is called Genbu. While Reimu's flying-talking turtle from the PC-98 era is named Genji.

If I remember correctly, the four gods are the Dragon (Qinglong/Seiryu), to the East, the Bird (Zhuque/Suzaku), to the South, the Tiger (Baihu/Byakko), to the West, and the Turtle (Xuanwu/Genbu), to the North.

There's also a 'fifth' that represents the center of the four: Huanglong/Koryu (another dragon).

So, no Kirin here.

Reimu would fit believe it or not, in the PC-98 series her partner was a turtle. His name escapes me at the moment but I believe he eventually became the guardian of the Hakurei Shrine.

Fixed the list and as for Kirin, that's from Final Fantasy XI, the drops from the four cardinal beasts allows you to summon Kirin. Koryu was released later as a Wyrm.

Kirin's a mythological creature in chinese myth as well. But not really related to the 5 Elements system. Some people do put him as the centre element though, which is not really correct.

Huanglong represents Earth. Japanese Elemental system doesn't have Metal, and represents the centre element as Void, which is unrepresented by any animal. Ouryu is pretty much the closest entity in Japanese Myth that resembles HuanLong, not really the real representation of Void.

In japanese system, Byakko represents Earth, while in the CHinese system, Byakko represents Metal. As we know HuangLong Represents Earth.

Weird, but I guess each is unique.

Genbu (玄武) - Turtle - Black - North - Winter - Water - Chinese Equivalent is Xuánwŭ (玄武)
Seiryuu (青竜 or 青龍) - Dragon - Blue (or Blue-Green or Azure) - East - Spring - Wind - Chinese Equivalent is Qīnglóng (青龍 or 青龙), who represents Wood instead of Wind
Suzaku (朱雀) - Bird (often a Phoenix) - Red (or Vermilion) - South - Summer - Fire - Chinese Equivalent is Zhūquè (朱雀)
Byakko (白虎) - Tiger - White - West - Autumn - Earth - Chinese Equivalent is Báihŭ (白虎), who represents Metal instead of Earth

Additionally, the Chinese also has a fifth named Huánglóng (黃龍 or 黄龙), "The Yellow Dragon", who represents Earth and Center (the 5 Chinese Elements being Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, and Earth). He is sometimes referred to in Japanese as Ouryuu (黄竜 or 黄龍).

However, the fifth of the Japanese Elements (along with Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire) is Void, and therefore, has nothing representing it since in represents Nothingness.

in Gensokyo, The Dragon, the Tiger, and the Phoenix work together to protect their beloved new home
from all filthy foreign threats that would dare to encroach upon Gensokyo's borders.
Remember what each of these girls does (IE: They all protect different people in different ways)

None of them do any of that, least of all for Gensokyo. Mokou only escorts people through the forest, and it's not even clear if there's anything to fear in there besides getting lost or caught in traps made by the rabbits. Meiling is more of a riffraff filter than a guardian, as no one in the mansion really needs to be protected, though she is still the only one that actually guards anything. Shou doesn't even fight, her spear is decoration, and based on her personality it's unlikely she would ever engage in any sort of conflict outside of spellcard duels, which are nonlethal.
