Perhaps this should be more explicit about things and say "the world of the living" instead of "this world". "This world" implies the world of living, as opposed to "that world", the world of the dead. English isn't as squeamish about talking about the afterlife.
I crossed fields, and I crossed mountains, and then I crossed over once more.
I crossed the land of the living's fence, and then I crossed over once more.
