    I don't see why. I'd expect that like any mandatory type of class, if the student didn't really care about the subject they're not going to remember much of it afterwards.

    This is the result of having to memorize, literally, thousands of Kanji characters. It takes so much memory that they're unable to install any other languages in their brains.

    That may have been said in jest (or it may not), but I wonder if it is true. It's a bit scary, if it is.

    When my friend went over to japan, she said they taught them old english. Incredibly formal, not at all what we use today. Also, it was mostly memorization of statements, not applicable uses of the language.
