Gensoukyo needs ZUN for energy. ZUN needs booze for energy. Thus booze is the one and only energy source. (optional three square meals a day help metabolize the booze efficiently)
Sounds about right in Gensokyo; just about everyone drinks in Gesnokyo. Though in the three fairies' case it's more like "Three Square Meals with a bottle of booze each"
