The potential 作れる is confusing me here, possibly because I'm conflating it with the English potential. Is it that he was happy to hear that making new metals was possible (and, in the next line, that this was the first time he's made one), or is it that he was happy to hear that he could make a new metal in this particular instance (and, in the next line, that this was the first time he's made this metal)?
I took it to mean he was happy to get the chance make something new, and that this was his first time making a NEW metal, as opposed to any metals that had existed prior. Does that sound about right?
I don't know why I find this page damn hilarious. Well, the whole series is graphically hilarious for some reason, but this page: particularly so.

yeah the gods that have been mentioned as male are a significant exception here, because they're all the ACTUAL ones from Japanese folklore, rather than new characters he's making up
