Version of post #69714 after successful cranial surgery.

Sadly, the source image is hopelessly JPEG-ridden, which not only lowers the possible quality, but also makes the resulting file HUEG due to the necessity of saving all those little irregularities introduced by JPEG. And a better version is nowhere to be found. Seriously, I demand there be a JPEG driving license, which would be required before you're allowed to save images in that format.

Are you on crack? Saving a jpeg riddle pic a second time should save to nearly the same size as the original riddled one. Those artifacts are a jpeg compression engines dream. An 8x8 block of nearly solid color (at least in really bad pics). I tested this once. Just make a pic of random colored 8x8 squares. You can compress it down to just a few KB with little compression visible (I tested with an 800x600 image and got down to under 10kb fairly well).

THIS IS... CHEWING GUM. SPEARMINT. AH HA HA.

That's true, but the new jpg would have even worse compression artifacts. And this isn't a jpg, this is a png, and the png is like 'wtf is this shit, I need to make this lossless!'

IF YOU CAN SEE SQUARES IN YOUR PIC... well, there's no pic anymore to talk about. And it's PNG, Sherlock. Which doesn't change the fact that, no matter the format, JPEG artifacts introduce little irregularities, which need to be encoded on save, wasting valuable bandwidth that could be used for actual image information, because there's no way to distinguish artifacts from genuine details.

I tried, even with 100% quality there are visible pixel changes, particularly her eyes' colour gradient doesn't seem to fare well with JPEG.

Like I said, they look like irregularities to our eyes, but to a jpeg, its bliss. Its because jpeg's first compression pass convertes discreet data to contiuous curves. This is jpeg 101 stuff from 1995.

Okay if people saying a bunch of shit about "lol it's PNG fucktard" if you thought I was implying that this:

comment #Always use PNG. It is superior~

Was me saying that the revised image is a JPEG you are mistaken. I'm not blind I can see the file type when I save shit. Also, JPEG in no way takes up more filespace than PNG. PNG uses makes larger files because it saves the actual image. JPEG files are lesser in size because of the artifacts it adds. JPEG files come in different quality. Goes up to 12 as far as I know. Anyway, JPEG=less PNG=more, but the original image.

You keep saying that, but you were the one that pointed out the original was jpeg, and then made some half-assed comment about compression that was way off base. Keep up with the topic man.

Here is the fact of some image format you've known...

PNG are Loseless image-raster compression format ...
JPEG are Lossy image-raster compression format ...
while BMP are uncompressed image-raster format.

if you compare between Losless or Lossy format wheter it's Audio, Video or Image ... the lossless one always better ... but usually cost more amount of diskspace in compensation.
So ... which one you pick? disk space or quality??
