The Grumman F7F Tigercat was developed by the Grumman aircraft corporation, and was loaded onto aircraft carriers by the U.S. Navy, unprecedented for a twin-engine plane. More than its primary air superiority role, it was also used for anti-ship and ground attack missions, and because of its large body it was even considered for carrying torpedoes. Its development was delayed because first priority was given to designing the F6F, but this large and very versatile machine was highly anticipated to cover the weaknesses of the relatively inflexible F8F. In fact, it was designed under the assumption that it would be loaded onto large carriers such as those of the Midway class, but because its body remained too heavy and its landing speed too swift, it was decided that actually using it on a carrier would be difficult, and so there were more opportunities to deploy it as a land-based aircraft. It was finished in time for WW II, but it slept in the hangar and was not deployed once, instead participating in the Korean War as a night fighter and reconnaissance craft.
