From what i've seen in Japanese Media. They tend to use Circles and X marks more often. Well in the end, i guess we can just chalk it up to Culture differences. I myself diffenetly grew up on "Check mark" = "Bad". X's are also bad too. Circles are Good.

I grew up with both systems, it got really confusing sometimes and I'd go up asking why I got marks docked when there were ticks.
