Artist's commentary

  • Original

The Doan people, who have a cultural practice of shaving women's hair, have distinctive headwear. They wear a headscarf with colorful pom-poms hanging from the sides, similar to how braided hair would hang down. These colorful pom-poms are also found in various parts of their clothing, drawing attention to the wearer.

The "waistband" worn by adult women is often made from wisteria vines, and may also incorporate silver threads. Along with being very colorful, the number of waistbands a woman wears is said to signify her prowess.
They have a tradition of cultivating tea trees, drinking tea, and venerating tea. They prefer strong, bitter tea made with a generous amount of tea leaves, of which is called descendants of the tea tree, and also enjoy drinking "sour tea" made using a unique method.

The "Genglongdang," a type of water drum, is said to be a tradition that is no longer preserved outside the Doan people. It is essential for their dance performances. The drum is made by hollowing out a round piece of wood, covering both sides with cowhide, and filling the interior with water.
    Ethnic Instrument
"Bamboo Tube with ground-up vegetables" involves placing seasoned dried beef, shredded pressed tofu, ginger, garlic, and fresh chili peppers into a bamboo tube. The mixture is then pounded with a stick until finely crushed. This dish is known for its spiciness, said to enhance one's appetite.
