Gensoukoumuten is making me care about a train. Not some sort of semi-anthro, Thomas the Tank Engine-style train; just a big machine with wheels and boiling water that pulls things.

How in God's name does he do this?

I dunno, but steam trains are awesome. They deserve this sort of respect.

    He took lessons from Oda.

The same way he took an old post man and made him one of the coolest characters to have graced this site.

I dunno, the whole feeling is like he took lessons from Ashinano (http://www.anymanga.com/yokohama-kaidashi-kikou/005/007/)

Which Oda are we talking about? Eiichiro?
Ashinano seems to be the more logical choice if you want to learn about how to do stories melancholic-ly.

Yeah, that Oda. Probably the part where the straw hats have to burn their original ship.

Not exactly; Going Merry was already dead when they reached Water 7, her keel was beyond repair and she wouldn't sail again. Her Klabautermann repaired her slightly in Skypeia, but in the end her soul begged Iceberg to help her go to her friends since she felt they were in danger. After she rescued her friends, they held a Viking funeral for her and she bid her farewell, as well as regret that she couldn't adventure with them anymore.

She did everything that she could for me...
    This can't be the end...
No, this is the end. There... isn't anything we can do about it.
    It can't...
    Huh?
    "The end"...
Your god... Yasaka-sama's already tried everything, just to give me a life that's lasted this long...
It's truly... truly more than I deserve...
...And she even said "sorry" to me in the end.
