Keep in mind that Shinto holds that everything - including non-living objects - holds spiritual essence. Things that receive a lot of use and love - such as, say, a train that faithfully carried passengers for many years - can develop this essence into an actual soul.

Stuff like that gets to me anyway. I always feel a little depressed when I see an old car just rusting away in a field.
