    Hang in There, Kogasa-san 111

    M34t is good!
Since steak is so expensive, I rarely eat it.
I once had a steak on the 10th floor of the Mansei Building, when I first came to Tokyo.
But I don't remember its taste anymore :-)

After translations... it makes much more sense. Nazrin is questioning Sanae's "feeding habits" to Kogasa.

For those of you who don't feel like going to the link in the title: 1980 yen (~$23) for a 4.5 oz steak.

...Maybe I'm just a dumb slob of an American, unsuited to the world of gourmet food, but if I pay $25 for a meal, I expect something bigger than a McDonald's Quarter Pounder.

100 bucks for a pound of steak? Asians may have a small appetite, but that seems like a rip off to me, regardless of how high quality the beef is.

No thanks to that, I'll be content with my 16oz of NY sirloin.

In case you don't know, meat is very expensive in japan due to shortages, since beef meat especially isn't exactly quite widespread due to the way japan works (not enough space to cultivate, can't raise cattle either...)

My dad got Kobe Beef once. It was pretty expensive, and small, but according to him it was the greatest piece of beef he ever had.

What would most American steaks, be they 8oz. to perhaps 16oz., be priced at and considered?

Where I'm from, $20 buys you a full meal (that is, with multiple side dishes and a salad) of which the main dish is a 12-16 oz. (depending on the cut) steak. Given, those are steakhouse prices, which are probably a little lower than what you would get at a proper restaurant, but the difference still surprises me. (Although I do live in the middle of nowhere, and now that I think about it, Tokyo's big-city markup is probably a big part of the price.)

This might explain why beef is expensive in Japan. Also when I visited Hawaii last year, they had small warnings in English and Japanese next to the beef jerky in the souvenir shops that said that you can't bring the jerky in to Japan.

Actually, it goes further back than that. Culturally and historically, beef is considered to be a luxury food in Japan (lack of farmland and all that). Beef prices dropped after the 1950's when trade barriers were dropped/lowered but as your link points out, its still a matter of contention.

To be fair, an eight ounce sirloin costs more than two quarter pounders.

At least she has connections on the tenth floor... she has the power to call upon the gods, after all! All she needs is good standing and she'd probably get to mooch for free.

Beef in American is petty low quality, and McDonald's Quarter Pounder are on the far side of fresh.

Actually, I have to question what a lot of people consider to be "quality" beef. Often times, it's extremely fatty pieces of meat (speaking as someone who can really only stand beef that is lean), and there really is such a thing as being too tender.

Many of the "high quality beef" items are just a waste of money. Frankly, so is anything anyone describes as a "delicacy".

That said, I haven't eaten anything McDonalds in years. "Far side of fresh" is putting it nicely.

With all that said, we Americans eat too much red meat, anyway. More than one red meat meal a week is bad for your health, and poultry and fish are cheaper and can be prepared into a greater range of dishes, anyway.

Islanders (especially places like Okinawa) who subsist mostly on seafood tended to live much longer, healthier lives before they started importing fatty beef.

That really depends on what sort of beef you're eating. American beef is delicious if you're buying genuine beef from a grocer and not a precut hamburger from a fast food chain.
