While this isn't Youmu's first time being a playable character within a shrump game (IN), it's been a while since we last see her in one. I'm rather glad she's back thought.
I'm really excited to see the new character Zun created for this game.

Not necessarily 10 new characters. It can just be the motif of one character (maybe the final boss), or the over-arching theme of the whole game (like UFO was in, well, UFO).
I remembered the ten spiritual realms after seeing Youmu in it. Youmu's Spell Cards' were largely based around the desire realms in Buddhism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_realms), and given how the game deals with divine spirits, ten spiritual realms seems to make sense.
As for Mima or Sakuya, Touhou games with standard format never went beyond four playable characters before, so unfortunately it's doubtful.
But it can change, or Ten Desires might even not be 'standard format' at all, in remembrance of the Phantasmagoria series, which are considered part of the mainline Touhou but weren't like the others.
Maybe Mima as enemy though? Not impossible. But as long as ZUN insists on trolling the fanbase about it, well...
A great improvement on the artwork. Is Reimu's hair much longer now?
If the hearts are lives and the stars are bombs, and I'm really seeing half a star and such, that means we're using the same system as the later games when bombs are concerned, right? But what about lives? There's half a heart in some of the screen shots.
Lower left, Sanae is fighting a boss? Shame all the danmaku got her covered. Though seeing "large number of spirits appear" I have thought Kasen may join in. Oh well at least there's Youmu~
I thought Mima would never be in any Touhou game again because of the legal issues between ZUN and Amusement Makers: that's why Yuuka and Alice can be brought again in future official games (ZUN could only "save" Reimu, Marisa, Yuuka and Alice, and all the other characters stayed with Amusement Makers).

Maybe Kasen paid a visit to where they originally were and started squishing them en masse, so the survivors escaped and are swarming over Gensokyo proper.
Like I said, because of the spirits and the "desire" thing, I thought Kasen. Although these are apparently holy, divine, good or at peace spirits, as opposed to the bad ones Kasen is apparently concerned with. It's still possible she appears. I'm just not holding my breath.
Oh-hoh... so there would be new 10 characters to make fun with, or maybe since its too much, some could be returning...
I had a feeling that Hijiri would make a comeback or just cameo on this one, also... maybe a male character would... nah, forget it, he'll never do that...
People really need to stop assuming that Mima or any PC-98 character is gonna make an appearance. The probability of them coming back is almost zero. Deal with it.
As for the game itself, it looks like the bomb system is not dependent on shot power. That's a good thing in my opinion.

I think what fueled this line of speculation are the references to Makai, and by association, PC-98, that make people wonder if characters from that series are going to make a return.
I'm sure that this will have something to do with Kasen, since her story seems tied to the rise of spirits.

On a second visit back to this pic I saw the skulls at the bottom left of the gameplay. Marisa's screen shows it highlighted but Sanae's 'skull' isn't. I wonder what it does...

Okay, in this case I predict:
1. One boss is human, most likely the battle butler of the final boss or even the final boss herself 2. One boss is an Asura. 3. One boss is a Deva 4. One Boss will be always hungry 5. One boss will be animal human 6. One Boss is Shiki while => Hell! (unlikely..)

No, it wasn't that long in the past, and you're right, it does look like a bow now! Maybe she now ties the ofuda to arrows ala Kikyou/Kagome from Inuyasha?

Hopefully that will tie into some new gimmick (like maybe the bad guys don't use their realm powers on lower difficulties or the realm stuff gives the playable heroines different shots, etc.).

Well, maybe his intention was the same with Byakuren and her "Devil's Recitation"
^ So, we miss PC-98 characters, but the only we can get is their old danmaku patterns used by a completely new character... it is hard, but I'm forced to be ok with this.
