You misunderstand. We love to hate him, and I have no doubts that it is intentional. He is just too inhuman with values completely different from our own. He is an extremely well written character and that is why everyone loves to hate on him. Personally I would like to erase his existence and those races that can't find a better way to prevent their own doom but to torture creatures for fun.
That is why we hate him, because it makes us feel better to see something that obviously has no compassion for us suffer as much as he does.
Regarding his logic and pointing out humans killing and eating other animals...
Using humans as a comparison and using that we do the same is as flawed as saying "Serial killers exists, and since all serial killers are humans, that must mean that all humans are serial killers." That logic can be interesting as an silly philosophical debate but in reality, it is nothing but a point that is riddled with flaws and has not place in actual reality.
Plus, if we suddenly found out that a certain species that we have been eating so far was a species of similar intellect as our own you can be assured that there would be an uproar.
