I look at it less like the cat not making it, but more that the cat's already gone, and is making sure that the girl doesn't suffer the same fate so soon, as arcc said (though not as fantastical, to be sure :P). I'm just glad Kitsune was willing to show the work, as I was interested in the story from the initial shots of the title page posted months ago.
