That's the appeal of this series. The total contrast makes the comics fun and interesting. I don't think anyone would actually want the show to be like this series instead of how it is, but the comics make a great supplementary read.

The contrast certainly does give fans more material but I think the show would do even better and still have dramatic impact if they included more humor, UST and playful ship-teasing. Any opinions?

Magical Girl Anime" type of thinking. Humor and stuffs they already used at the start to "lure" people in and they succeeded. Now, it's just pure explanation of why Magical girl is a serious business. I think I'm okay with the story having rarely any humor and mostly suspense and mystery. It suits this anime better.
On the other hand, I would love to see QB say something honest from the start.

Based on sales ranking data and projections, Madoka is on track to become one of the most successful TV anime in history in terms of unit sales. I don't think any of us are in a position to second-guess the approach it's taking.

It's an interesting thought exercise.
Madoka gets compared to Eva a fair bit, and that shit has its cake (side materials, Episode 26, Asuka Strikes to Bardiel) and eats it too, (the parts people remember.) It also makes money hand over fist.

And both were deconstructions of their genre and at least Eva had a massive amount of influence in how mecha shows were made, not to mention the ton of symbolism there.
I'm not sure if Madoka is quite at the same level of Eva though.
I remember when Eva first came out and holy shit it blew a lot of people's minds.
Compared to other many other titles made from an original anime the Madoka manga is still selling a lot even more so for a first volume. Generally speaking manga sales are like snowballs they build inertia over time and at the rate Madoka's going I'd say it's bound to be big.

Personally I think it may exceed Eva but Eva was made back when it was much easier to make a classic. At least within Japan, fans outside tend to hold the old shows in too high a regard.
I think DH may have a point. Sometimes you can only do something once. Elvis, WoW, Eva are all examples of that. Doesn't matter what happens after, you never hit the same note because definitive already happened.
Shouldn't this picture have the so_moe_im_gonna die tag? Considering the last bit Kyouko says on the last panel?
