I don't think there are any genes for any particular type of person to run like that based on location(anyone living in Japan be they ethnically Japanese or not). XD I think its just Rule of Cute in effect here. No special magical Japanese cultural thing here.

So, in terms of real life, who are Ran, Yukari, and Chen? I assume friends of the author, but is Chen suppose to be the child of whomever Ran and Yukari are or is Chen suppose to be another friend? Sorry in advance for the stupid question, I'm just curious.

I think Yukari's the head of the circle Kogasa and Sanae are apart of. Ran and Chen are her helpful Minions and fellow Touhou otaku.
