  • Steampunk Portal

I was sitting around at Swancon, chatting with friends, and the idea of Steampunk Portal came up. ...and we got thinking, how on earth would you make portals in the early industrial era? Oh crap, you'd have to *dig* them, wouldn't you? With your steam-powered pick.

And well, Portal, being made by Valve, available on Steam? It just kind of needed to be done.

By the way, I've finished Portal 2, but please refrain from spoilers in the comments as others may not yet have done so.

Also in my Steampunk Portal themed series:
    The Gentlemanly Escort Cube
    The Wheatley Dumbwaiter Service

    Time: About 7 hours
Tools: Photoshop CS4, Wacom Intuos tablet, cgtextures

Wow, I just noticed that she's got propulsion and repulsion gel on her belt.

Nah, it's probably to mark the "portal" edges. (Interesting how the portals and gels match, isn't it?)

But the portals don't make any sense, it looks like she merely blew a hole in the walls

but kind of funny that even the "portals" are just paint

Well, I guess she DID blow up a hole in that walls.
Portal paint is just a habit.

nah, the insides of the portals look more like cave workings then the inside of a building.

But I do wonder how the hell that portal gun works.

You suggesting she carves holes in the walls with the painted 'blades' to make a portal?

    Unlikely.

    Even though it's a steam-powered pickaxe.

    Right.

Removing the repulsion/propulsion gel tags, the stuff on Chell's belt is paint used to indicate where portals should go.

This pic was originally posted to Deviantart.

I forget who drew it, but she explained that this version of the ASHPD was something along the lines of a steam-powered Pickaxe. She's also drawn a steampunk weighted companion cube, and a steampunk wheatley-on-GLaDOS-body (in the form of a steam engine with the other cores in the cars trailing behind it).
