Sinnoh, where Torterra is from, is modeled after Hokkaido. Unova is the first region in the main games not based on any real location (not in Japan anyway).

Presumably fact that all wild animals in Pokeworld have violent superpowers and territorial instincts has led to considerably less urban sprawl and more habitat preservation. Mostly out of a desire by developers to not be set on fire, cut in half, drowned, or struck by lightning.
