It's something about reverence in the presence of the gods.

I think, it´s necessary to note, that the belief says, that the recitation of the prayer must be perfect to make the blessing effective. That´s why the priest feels so pressured and everyone is so annoyed.

I've never had much experience with this particular type of Japanese (archaic/ecclesiatical?), so I just went with what I felt was a good equivalent. Thank goodness for the translation into modern Japanese...

I think what's really making it tough (In this context) is the audience of gods and clergy.. Yeah, that would be some real pressure.

It's apparently a prayer to Inari. I found it almost word for word, but before Ookami, Inari's name is said, either as Inari or a long drawn out very reverent version of his name.

The whole prayer thing is hard to translate because it is bungo, or literary/Classical Japanese.

I wonder Reimu's subbing for a real Miko/Priest/generally-religious friend of Hitoshi's.

Well both Reimu and Marisa have showed up in previous comics as friends. Also I must say the dancing after the party will be interesting. Just hope Koagasa's side doesn't do the Dance of Joy.

Not that I can think of. Unless you want to use Ye Olde Butchered English.

Well, trying to translate Old Japanese sayings is quite difficult. I tried to do so with Chinese, and it was tough.

Yeah, I guess Middle English might work best for that prayer, if anybody here even knows it. The Canterbury Tales is a good example of what you'd expect:
Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote
(When in April the sweet showers fall
And pierce the drought of March to the root, and all)
And so on. Far enough away from Modern English, but most words are still recognizable.

Now actual Old English is like:
Fæder ūre þū þe eart on heofonum
Sī þīn nama ġehālgod.
(Father of ours, thou who art in heaven,
Be thy name hallowed.)

So good luck with that.

I was Referring to the Trope

It's supposed to be genuine literary/archaic Japanese, though—a bit mumbled or stuttered, but not Ye Olde Butchered Japanese, as it were.

I can't really find any proper Old or Middle English translation engines online. I might be able to fake Middle English a bit, but it's not my forte, and Old English is so strongly different that I wouldn't even want to try. (Not to mention that it might end up so unintelligible as to be pointless.)

Honestly, I'd think Latin is perfectly fine for a church ceremony scene involving another archaic language, but perhaps because it's the only language I could reasonably manage and that I figure most of the readership here would recognize.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, Latin is the worst choice for a translation here, except for all the other possible choices. The plain fact is that liturgy is so steeped in cultural circumstances that no translation is ever going to meet all the conditions required to make it entirely satisfactory; Western cultures' monotheism and denialist attitude towards syncretism simply do not mesh with Eastern cultures' traditions, to say nothing about the difference between a proper liturgical language (Latin) and simple archaic Japanese. I've reverted the old note and added a more helpful translation note, and I honestly don't think it's going to be possible to make it any better than that.

The Latin touch is simply epic!

It's the miko... all the others (including the tsukumogami) are gods (神) or demons (魔), but a miko is merely a shaman woman.

Uhh...thanks...? I'm torn between taking this as a vote of confidence and being the best of all bad choices. :-S Anyway, at least there's a reasonable translation note of some sort there now.

It's Kogasa's parents from a few strips earlier and Kogasa's younger sister with her husband.

1 vote for the Latin. I really can't see any other way this could be translated while retaining the right feel.
