I usually start peaceful and increase the difficulty when I get myself a proper house. (Well, I guess most people do.) By that time, I take all things into consideration to properly defend the house against mobs to the point I can laugh away hostile mobs, but the creeper's hiss is still the sound that defines anxiety.
