The titular hero of Tsuburaya Productions's 1966-1967 tokusatsu TV series. His human host is Hayata Shin. Due to Ultraman becoming a title for those of the Land of Light who have protected Earth, he is often referred to with additional names to distinguish him from his Ultra Brothers, such as Shodai [Ultra-]Man ("The First [Ultra-]Man"), [Ultra-]Man-niisan ("Brother [Ultra-]Man"), or even just Man, with Ultraman Hayata, based on his host's name, becoming a popular choice for some younger Western fans.

In the original series, Ultraman went through three main designs (referred to as Type A, Type B, and Type C), with Type C being the most common design used in appearances since, though with the first two being referenced from time to time. There was also a "Type D" design that existed briefly after the original series, used in stage shows, originating from converting Zoffy's suit back into an Ultraman suit, as his suit was originally the Type A suit (previously also used by Imit Ultraman, and would go on to be used for Ultraman Jack). This would all establish a trend of slight redesigns for Ultras during and after their original series, as new suits are made, especially those who look similar to one another.
