It was later revealed that Jack and his family became infected by the mold superorganism after they encountered Eveline, a human bioweapon created by The Connections capable of mind control. During the part of the shipwreck, Ethan encountered Jack in a vision, revealing to himself to be remorseful for his actions and pleads Ethan to free his family from Eveline's influence.
