A type of spread similar to Butter but unlike Butter which is made from butterfat from milk, Margarine is made from refined vegetable oils.
Since it was cheaper to make and sell than butter when it was first introduced, the butter industry tried to ban or restrict the sale of margarine in the United States like spreading misinformation on how dangerous the product was to forcing margarine makers to dye their product pink instead of yellow to make it unappetizing. However, due to World War II and the US Government need for a cheaper spread for both civilians and the military, the restrictions on selling of margarine were eventually lifted.
