The "+" symbol generally used in mathematical, scientific or punctuational contexts. This also apply to its alternative forms like the "﬩" with its lower leg omitted, sometimes used to avoid resemblance to the Christian cross.
For standalone "+" symbol without those usage contexts, use Greek cross instead.
