The northeastern part of the island of Ireland governed by the United Kingdom.
Historically, the region was separated from the rest of Ireland due to religious and political issues following Irish independence from the UK in 1922, with much of the area's Protestant-majority choosing to remain within the UK instead of joining the Catholic-majority "republican" Ireland. From the late 1960s up until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, the area saw an era of protracted conflict known as "The Troubles", involving republican and loyalist paramilitary groups and the British government.
