uss north carolina (bb-55)
The lead vessel of the North Carolina-class battleships, BB-55 represented a radical departure from previous United States Navy battleship designs with its greater emphasis on speed. Commissioned in April, 1941, USS North Carolina went on to be the most decorated American battleship of World War II, earning fifteen Battle Stars for combat service in the Pacific Theater. Decommissioned in 1947 and stricken from the Naval Register in 1960, North Carolina was acquired by her namesake state and since 1962 has been a museum ship in Wilmington, North Carolina.
