vektor-r4
The Vektor R4 is a family of military firearms that entered service in 1980, manufactured by Denel Land Systems (formerly LIW / Vektor) for the South African Defence Force. Based on the IMI Galil ARM rifle, it incorporates polymer furniture to withstand high-temperature bush warfare, a longer buttstock to fit larger South African soldiers, and reinforced internal components. It has been developed into several variants, such as:
- Vektor R4 - the standard 5.56mm assault rifle variant, replacing the 7.62mm FN FAL (R1) in South African service. Features a polymer handguard, folding bipod, and high-strength polymer 35-round magazine.
- Vektor R5 - carbine variant of the R4 with a shortened barrel and handguard, functionally equivalent to the Galil SAR. Lacks a bipod and bayonet lug.
- Vektor R6 - ultra-compact personal defense carbine variant with an extremely short barrel, equivalent to the Galil MAR (Micro Galil).
- Vektor CR-21 - experimental bullpup rifle based internally on the Vektor R4 mechanism housed inside a futuristic polymer stock shell.
- LM4 / LM5 / LM6 - semi-automatic civilian and law enforcement market versions (*Lyttelton Machine Carbine*) corresponding to the R4, R5, and R6 respectively.
