What's actually wrong and always was wrong is the popular interpretation that all the touhous are basically human girls with hats or animal ears, doing human-like girly things all the time. Most of them are inhumane in one or several aspects and spend most of their existences doing stuff that's appropriate for their concepts and more or less inappropriate for humans.
Koishi just happens to be particularly inhumane, because her ego is gone. So her mind is a weird mix of untamed desires (id) and compulsions to follow norms (super-ego), without the conscious part to balance them. This makes her child-like, unpredictable and generally dangerous to be around.

I bet she and Flandre are great friends.
Koishi: "I once stabbed a man's family to death and ate his little doggy in front of him while he screamed in pain as he watched after I broke his arms, legs and heart. Then I killed him nice and slowly."

Flandre: "What's a man?"
"An ugly bag of mostly saturated fats and protein. But enough meat, have a pudding."

There's a great discussion about this type of concept on post #688193, and how different artists are basically interpreting these characters. In the whole "cannon vs. fannon" debate, most people actually like cannon more. It's not the fact that we don't like seeing these characters in more off-color situations, bus since Zun made these characters so vague, and the fact that the Touhou games are hard as sin, finding out their TRUE personalities/backstories is somewhat of a game to people. Hell, most of Touhou community is VERY secretive about the endings of each game because again, the games are hard as sin, no one from the outside can really truly understand their motives & actions, so they go on what the fans draw in artworks.
This is probably what Zun wanted, to fragment the community, so they can have different perspectives of his works, and how his characters really are. We don't know what Remilia Scarlet is really like behind closed doors, so we can have her be a cruel tyrant, or a adorable crybaby. We don't know if Marisa is really putting on a headstrong face, because for all we know, she might be a sensitive, and gentle person. We don't know if Reimu trully enjoys being a Miko, or that she finds pleasure in being a miko, to bring some excitement to her life. This is why i think fannon holds more ground, because Touhou just very recently, became a huge thing, and not everyone has the superhuman ability to 1CC EVERY GAME, even on normal mode.

Touhou is not owned by the fans but by ZUN. If he decides to put a stop to it then it ends. ZUN stated himself he is a fan of his games and the lore behind it all. Canon of how character behavior is determined is based off of race of the character. Youkai do have many catagories of race, but still have the general mindset of messing with humans. ZUN has based the overall character designs from myth, lore, and concepts. Touhou has shown it's darker side with FS. You don't even need to beat the games to understand a character. You can read any of the print works to better understand how a character acts. Also if you can 1CC one of the 18 games for the windows era you can 1CC them all.

The print works only give you a taste, of how characters act. They are not the representative of how the games are. Zun wants you to play his games, and he does his best to hide all the good tidbits of characters, in the endings of each game. Also, Zun stated that he probably won't end the project anytime soon, and even if he did, the rest of the community will still go on making works. Finally, it is possible to 1CC a game on normal, but no one has the mental fortitude, to replay all the games, to see all the endings. The endings can be so disjointed from each other, that you can't even tell for certain what happened, or who REALLY did what.

So you're saying 14 different types of print works centered around mainly Reimu and Marisa I can't tell how they act? Only 6 of these are single issue and still provide enough information in a very broad context. The games gives you that first impression of the characters and the biggest impact. The print works give something the games could never convey. The games' endings convey what the playable characters are doing during the incident but it isn't resolved until Hakurei shrine maiden ends it. So all the endings happen in a vague order but is conveyed through PMiSS how the endings should be placed.
The print works can give you a lot of impressions. SoPM gives some detailed information on most youkais though some of them are hella different on the interpretation of the fans, like nitori's jerkassery and kisume's scary antics. Reimu is portrayed lazy most of the time but she's so overzealous on WaHH and Forbidden Scrollery...
I think ZUN made his character descriptions vague either purposefully as to give people their own unique interpretations or accidentally and still people managed to fill in the gaps where he didn't.
I interpreted this different from everyone going 'YANDERE XDDDD KOISHI IS YANDERE NOW'. Koishi was always a very unstable character due to the whole deal with her eye being closed.
This was reflected in her 13.5 gameplay when she'd occasionally use a random move without the player having manipulated this action.
I don't get why people get upset over this sorta stuff, really. Interpretation is all in opinion really. Getting upset because it wasn't represented in official art is childish.
