I actually find it adorable. They won't smile, but not because they are angry or sad. Only because you want them to.

Seen one of my little cousins happily playing one moment and because someone ask them to look their way and smile, instant unamused face.

Doesn't matter. More character, more conflict, more story material means more fanwork. I'm happy with that.
