Finnish thing. Basicly it's a derivation of that horrendous "ebin spurdo spädre" -subculture, that Finland tends to be infamous for around the internet.
I think his whole point was the difference between "English" and "American," via a historical reference.
That possibility certainly occurred to me. He might not have realized that it could be very offensive to use "Southern Baptist" as a synonym for "American", since Southern Baptists are noted not just as a religion but as a political force whose aims are repellent to much of the rest of the country.
If I referred to all residents of England as "Thatcherites", including those who had suffered the most from Thatcher's policies, perhaps it'd be understandable why it's not a good "historical reference" to use.
