I'm almost drop the anime because of that, but still continue to watch anime until the end. I'm really disappointed with the anime.
I dropped the anime the episode afterward that because it was pretty clear that Kisaragi's sinking wasn't going to be any kind of "turning point" for the series.
Kisaragi sank, people were sad, then got over it.
It was completely unnecessary. Unless the last few episodes had the fleet girls dropping like flies (which apparently didn't happen based on the pictures posted here), they could have stripped that scene out and it wouldn't have mattered.

Think about it, almost none of the scenes in any of the episodes matter. It's not like there was an actual plot going on, or at least one to give a crap about.
The entire thing was a glorified Fubuki fanfiction, with a crapload of fan pandering.
It's not about whether a scene mattered or not, it's about how enjoyable it was. And I sure enjoyed the ride, even if it was nothing I expected. Although, there's nothing wrong with that. I got my cute shipgirls doing cute things and Abyss suffering. I'm content.
They are just answering demand. The whole story could have been fun comedy story with forced action in the last 2-3 episodes.
Still seeing the Feels-junkies who demanded more character killing in season 2.
Right, personally i am okay with the anime, i get the feeling that season1 was a world building setting up the building block before REALLY going into it.
Just like a Touhou anime even if Zun himself wrote it there would be complains. Because your favorite characters don't show up, the seiyuu voices were "bad choices", the plot story is not as fun or serious as you expected, another animation studio could have been better, your personal character focus was not chosen and endless excuses we clearly see here about the few people who complain.
Let's get real, the choice was acceptable. They took as much popular characters as they could fit on only 12 episodes, then follow a vague story line as an excuse to see those characters get a character (what it made the game popular in the first place, otherwise this would be another generic Daisenryaku) and give as much fan service as possible. This is not a Dragon Ball length production. Even us on the first maps we didn't give a damn about the enemies, you only wanted to get a desired drop and make it battle those cardboard cut-out foes... just like the anime. And fortunately they didn't choose a harem plot, that would have been a possible alternative they though.
I'll give the whole Kisaragi incident to whoever wrote the script just to see where they were going with it. The season was mostly okay until this last episode. The last episode kinda felt it was hashed together. While I expected a call back to Kisaragi near the end, it wasn't quite what I expected, and I don't think we'll get any answers until the second season. Long story short, somewhat half-assed writing after the first 3 eps minus some. Here's hoping to a better written and better presented second season.
In the meantime, I'm preparing for the next event.
Hey! Let's set up a possible rival to the protagonist by having her wound her in the eye! Nope, she just dies offscreen after a single attack. Not even a real fight.
Well, none of the fights felt like they were a fight. More like fighting cardboard cutouts. May as well be.

Personally, the whole season was just bad scriptwriting from start to beginning. Kisaragi's death was pointless (except as a preclude to a last minute TWEEEST on the final episode that would make Shyamalan cringe), Shitty TTK is supposed to be a faceless protagonist for players to project themselves on, but he makes shitty decisions all the time, plot was rushed all over the place, etc...
Basically only Episode 6 was executed well, and that was pure slice of life.
Final episode was disappointing. Lazy animation (heck, even MMD models are more dynamic instead of just sliding across the screen), and the shitty TTK's grand strategy pretty much only amounts to "throw ALL the ships and moneys at the enemy". Gee, why didn't he do that earlier, huh? Along with carrying extra spare equipment/bows/arrows for the kanmusu.
Oh sure, they limited themselves in the earlier episodes to match with the game mechanics, but then they just had to throw all that out for the final episode, which raises more questions than it answers. Especially regarding our dear shitty TTK's commanding abilities.
...which is not to say that I didn't enjoy the anime. But most of the enjoyment came from fanservice (not of the cheesecake kind. Usually.) and fan-pandering. If I weren't a fan of Kancolle and aware of the setting and characters, I'd have to say that this is a downright terrible anime, with questionable scriptwriting, disjointed direction, and lazy animation.
Still looking forward to the sequel though. Dammit, can't help myself.
Well, I read somewhere that they believe that the anime is a plot build up and character development for season 2. One reason its bad is because they want to include as much elements as possible into 12 episodes, which is obviously too little. If they are making a 24 episodes season, it might work better. Might.
Am I the only one who actually liked Ep 5 and kind of 7 along with 6? But seriously the last ep was ass, there's no redemption to be found in it at all. If they ever actually get the funding to do a S2 after this, they should just reboot the whole thing and follow the Fubuki Ganbarimasu manga, because so far, the best episodes were all the pointless SoL one that gave fan-pandering. Moe girls doing moe things is NOT what I want, but it would still be better than what happened to this season, goddamn.

Oh I like 5, 6 and 7, but that's not the main reason why I want to watch the anime. Ep1 is decent, I was having good expectation about it, but ep3 flag overload, ep11 is too cliche, and the ending is rushed. Yes, goddamn hero moment is nice, but 3 in one episode? That's too much. And at least explain why the admiral suddenly return (well, most probably he is busy in LSC)

He's busy building a tower or running a company. Or maybe doing one of those R-18 stuff, like raising mermaids or something.
Edit: And yeah, the cavalry moments were like one asspull after another.

My man! I guess the Admiral is more human than we thought, that he actually get bored and go do something else.

I just hope that if there IS an S2, it will lean more towards SoL. Show us interactions and fun, maybe even show us some fun with the Abyss. Some action would still be good but I doubt the fans were expecting a masterpiece. All we really wanted was just to see our favorite girls on tv.
I get a feeling the writers were experimenting with the show and trying to see which would get the most reaction from fans, and in the end they just gave up.

Thats fine, but then why not go all-in on the glorified Fubuki fan fiction with a crapload of fan pandering? Look at the anime Dog Days. Its straight-up slice of life, animal girl moe, comedy hi-jinks with the occasional 'demon' episodes (which similarly gets resolved in (almost) pure "HAPPY END!" fashion.)
The whole Kancolle anime series felt like none of the writers were even aware one another. One episode they're training, the next someone dies, the next they're weeping, the next they're over it, the next Nagamon (best thing of the whole series), the next 'get ready for the big battle!', the next 'oh the battle is over'; teh end please wait for season 2.
Maybe we could hope against hope in the second season that Kiyoshimo is the protagonist. We had a destroyer obessed with carriers in season 1, why not one obsessed with senkan in season 2? It'd also serve as a great gateway in the story to bring in Musashi.

It'll be better if there was no main character and every girl is equally important with their own short story. When you make a certain girl the main character in something that has no definite main character, it turns into a self pandering fan fiction.
Heh, so you want 150+ episodes of random stuff like Pokemon? Even that randomness follows a plot. As this is not Pokemon be glad if there's more than 12 episodes and an OVA.
Or maybe you prefer 12 main girls stuffed together per episode with only 2 minutes of story each one? Though the idea of episodes per ship class like episode 6 sounds like a good one.

This might actually be a good idea. Recently some of the better anime being aired are the short 3 or so minute ones. It'll be cheap and net in much more money if it end up well.

Good idea actually. Something like "Ship Girls' Daily Life" SoL short. And have another series that focus on action, since the shorts have covered the SoL parts.
Way late to this conversation because I watched the episodes with someone else and coordination takes a few days. Overall I enjoyed it, but couldn't get into the dramatic moments. Because there wasn't much lead up to most of the "everybody get high-pitched and start wigging out" bits I tended to end up laughing at them instead. Since I don't play the game, getting to hear the voices (other than clicking through the voice database) was a treat.
In short, I liked it while it happened, but I probably won't rewatch it for at least a decade and definitely wouldn't buy a disk set.
I'm kinda late to the party but I'll post my thoughts about this anyway...
I don't want to sound like an elitist or pretend that my taste is superior to anyone's but, I don't like the idea of accepting this kind of quality from a product and being okay with it. The anime had VERY FEW good points and overall only episode 6 was a joy to watch (IMO 4 and 8 were good too but I can see their flaws and why some people didn't enjoyed them) Most things were executed poorly, specially on the last episode.

This was the thing that disappointed me the most. Even though most fights with the abyssal were underwhelming (Why was Midway/Henderson so weak?) and even though they didn't gave any new kind of details on the abyss and their motivations, it was kinda interesting to see Wo's "character arc"... but then they decided not to give her any kind of importance on the last episode...
I like the animation better and the choices for character voices....but it's sad that I found KanHoli, a fan made series done by Sound Holic to be vastly better than the official anime...
I honestly enjoyed the show for the most part. I'll admit that the CG sucked (but I've always been more of a 2-D guy anyway) and the whole Kisaragi subplot was handled terribly and seemed to just be there to give Mutsuki a reason to be in the main trio; but I'm willing to overlook that stuff since I was otherwise pretty decently entertained.
The only constant sore spot for me was the way the admiral was handled. An off-screen deus-ex-machina who is nonetheless constantly talked up by a number of characters. Honestly, I would have much preferred that he be an actual character (see also: the producer in any of the Idolmaster anime or manga) or axed completely.
But I could have been willing to forgive even that mishandling... If not for the finale being so downright rushed with asspulls left right and center.
tl;dr: Enjoyed most of the show, last episode was eyerolling.
