Just another rainy day for poor ol' Muppo. Maybe she should just get a raincoat instead. Raincoats are better than umbrellas in every way yet everybody still enjoy using umbrellas.

Umbrellas are better for when you have some kind of non-waterproof bag, like a purse or backpack.
You'd likely be holding paper or electronics inside, and getting those wet would be a disaster.

Umbrellas have the major advantage that, in Japan at least, there's always a umbrella rack that you can leave it in when you go inside somewhere (or sometimes a dealie to wrap a bag around the umbrella). There's not always a convenient coat rack, let alone one that you can put a sopping wet raincoat in.

(They sell cheapo rain ponchos at the convenience stores, though)

For Muppo in this situation, there'd usually be a 'forgotten' umbrella sitting in the rack that you could 'borrow' until you 'put it back later'.

The "communal transparent umbrella" that you're not really sure if the one you take is the same one you put in ?

Pretty much. No-one really gives a shit about the cheapo vinyl umbrellas (Even Japanese police laugh at you if you report one lost/stolen). But by god, if you 'borrow' a nice one, you better 'forget' one later.

Hopefully she isn't holding the "forgotten" umbrella.
