I assume the Admiral pulled the "rely on me" card when she herself can't handle the stress of leadership at its worst.
No wonder the girls are off their rocker, their crutch was useless.
If their crutch was useless they all would have killed each other ages ago. Unless you want to go full commissar and live through fear and indoctrination, this is probably the best you can hope for.

From the looks of things, an iron fist approach would have been better. These girls clearly needed a hardass to lead them and keep them in check, not a shoulder to cry on.

Lol, maybe this is exactly that "killing each other" moment that comes from the crutch being useless. Also false dichotomy.
Well, you can only put so much weight on a crutch before it snaps from the strain. Which seems to be exactly what happened.
A commander can be your ally, even your friend. But no one should be anyone's crutch. One should teach other's how to stand by themselves. A crutch shouldn't be used longer than completely necessary.
Though tbf, I do feel like half of those with mental issues in this story would not get past the standard Mental Health Assessment most militaries have during application of service...

My point was more that things reached critical mass, and finally exploded. To me if she was completely ineffective, it wouldn't have taken nearly as many steps before it devolved into chaos. I point to no one, thus far, dying (despite getting seriously injured) and that various people, while yandere, are coming together to prevent others from killing/getting killed. To me, this is a situation where a herculean show of will kept things together until finally inertia overcame them. A weak crutch would have had the situation completely devolve eons ago.
This Commander was trying way too hard to be an anime protagonist and make everyone happy all of the time. She should have known that in a war situation she could be their Commander, she could be their friend but she could never be both. All of this is the result of trying to please all of the people all of the time.
If you can believe in me...And not just me, either.Every one of your comrades here on this baseSurely-Just believein me, your Commander. Then I promise...to continue to exist as your warmth.
