I'm surprised no one noticed sooner then. Crows aren't exactly good natured pets.

Funnily enough, a crow decided to start making noise just as I read this page. Is that supposed to mean something?

Crows and ravens are very different animals not even in the same genus. They only share being black in common, and starlings and blackbirds are also different. (Crows are actually closer relatives of blue jays, for example.)

What? No they're not. From the wikipedia entry for the genus Corvus: 'The genus includes species commonly known as crows, ravens, rooks and jackdaws; there is no consistent distinction between "crows" and "ravens", and these appellations have been assigned to different species chiefly on the basis of their size, crows generally being smaller than ravens.'

Crows and ravens are in the same genus, very much so. Corvus includes both crows and ravens (as well as rooks and jackdaws among others).

Similarly, カラス /karasu/ by itself refers to both crows and ravens in Japanese (among others), since it's just the genus Corvus, not any specific bird therein. However, it's generally translated as crow - even though the ones in Japan are friggin' huge.

Crow species in Japan include (going by Wikipedia):

• the Large-billed crow (aka Jungle crow), Corvus macrorhynchos (hashibuto-garasu: fat-beak crow);
• the Carrion crow, Corvus corone (hashiboso-garasu: slender-beak crow);
• the Rook, Corvus frugilegus (miyama-garasu: mountain-country crow);
• and the Common raven, Corvus corax (watari-garasu: migrant crow).

But I have the impression they're all mostly referred to as karasu by non-specialists.

Ironically the last one on the list is a name of the Primarch for the Ravenguards Space Marine legion. GW isn't very original in their..naming conventions.
