Idk why people here being so negative about drawing some characters in dark skins though, besides the somewhat poor quality (I know that part of this may come from the terrible adaptations of large media companies to bump their ES... or whatever inclusivity scores while neglecting their works' other parts, but come on, this isn't one of them).
And I understand that unlike other headcanons (such as all about youkai's natures, Yukari's and other sages' pasts, sapphic relationships,...) there is no hints about this on the canon and even contradict it. But again, this is Touhou, not some works with strict canon nor fanwork guidelines so this is still fair tho, just even non-canon than some others.

Same reason most are not fond of ugly bastard ntr.
Why not just draw original art instead of blackwashing? Or actual indian mythology. Tons of fantastic topics there.
Another point is that race-baiting is cheap way to artist to get known which is rather dubious.
Only Zun will have the final say. Everything else is fanon.
And somehow, I doubt ZUN will really approve his characters being raceswapped, especially just to "Own the Cons" so to speak... Assuming he even feels like weighing in on this issue.

If you knew anything about Okina Matara you’d realize how funny this statement is. Okina is based off of the Buddhist God Matarajin. Who is in great part in real life based off of the Indian Hindu/Buddhist god Mahakala. Mahakala traveled alongside Buddhism, from India all the way to Japan, where he became Matarajin. I mean, it’s in the name. “Matara”, the Sanskrit word for “Mother”.
So really, this art right here? More accurate than a good majority of Touhou art.
