To me calling an american football a rugby ball feels like calling a football (soccer) a volleyball because they both have the same general round shape. Rugby balls are less round and have flatter sides, even if the general "egg" shape of the ball is the same.
Also they usually aren't brown, I've never seen people call these a rugby ball, rugby balls are usually more like this as seen in post #1588533 post #2804765 post #3635549 post #4057503 for example.

Looking at the rugby ball tag atm it seems like some of them may be mistagged american footballs like post #4762813, but maybe English treats those terms differently and calls the two interchangeably?

No, in America at least the two are distinct, but Rugby isn't as popular here and most people just don't know the difference.

Edit: Looking through the various rugby related tags, I'm not sure the confusion is an English problem. There are quite a few pictures of characters wearing rugby uniforms, but carrying american footballs. Seems like a mistake on the part of Japanese artists.

I personally did not even realize there's a slight shape difference to them.
I've never played either game but I just directly associate the brown color and oval shape to rugby for some reason.

How are we suppose to tell the difference between rugby ball and american football if they were both brown though?

This picture is the first thing that shows up on Google when you search for rugby ball.
But you don't get as many brown ones if you just search for rugby.

That's what I noticed too.

The few brown rugby balls I've ever seen never have those white markings on them, they're pretty much all brown (maybe with some branding on them or such). If it has those two white lines and/or the white "stitch" to me it's an American football.
