Right now, the hoodie tag encompasses a combination of hooded sweaters and hooded jackets that aren't being tagged as either. This is annoying enough, but it becomes particularly egregious when you look at the *_hoodie tags. Each one of them is fracturing *_jacket and *_sweater searches by instead having posts tagging as *_hoodie, while simultaneously being a needlessly specific combination tag for its *_hooded_jacket/*_hooded_sweater equivalents. It's as if we had tags like blue_collared_shirt or plaid_short_shorts.

Included in the BUR are all of the *_hoodie tags with more than 50 posts except for long_hoodie (which has no long_sweater equivalent) and edie_crop_hoodie, which is for a specific design. The hoodie tag itself also needs its posts to be tagged with jacket/sweater (at which point we can decide if we still need it or not), but for now we should take care of the smaller spinoff tags with this BUR.

Hoodies are actually hooded sweatshirts, so no hoodie posts should be tagged sweater or jacket, and if hoodies aren't distinct enough then we should have hoodie imply sweatshirt and `black_sweatshirt`, `white_sweatshirt`, `open_sweatshirt`, etc. and get rid of the hoodie equivalents per this BUR.* The linked post is just a hooded sweatshirt drawn funny, but something like post #5450019 might be a jacket.

So blue hoodie exists because there's no `blue_sweatshirt` (only blue sweater) and no even more generic "blue torsowear" equivalents like blue shorts, blue legwear, blue footwear etc.

*Unless we redefine sweatshirts as also being sweaters rather than just considering crocheted/knitted/wool/cotton pullovers as sweaters.

Nobody on this site uses sweatshirt properly, let's not kid ourselves. 99.9% of the posts under sweater should be under sweatshirt, but people don't use it that way. In reality sweatshirt tags should just be aliased to sweater tag because there is no hope of distinguishing the two.

While I don't agree with this, even if we do decide to use *_sweatshirt tags the *_hoodie tags will still need to be deprecated and updated accordingly. Whatever solution we choose, the first step remains the deprecation of these composite tags.

It also seems some might just want "hoodie" to stay as its own article of clothing because it's too hard to tell whether a hoodie is a sweater/sweatshirt or jacket. E.g., post #5450019 and post #5448609 look like jackets to some people (like you) but pass as sweaters/sweatshirts to me, especially as sweaters/sweatshirts can be thinner like jackets with the material too hard to glean from the art style.

I once proposed to alias hoodie to hooded_sweatshirt, because that's what it really is, it got downvoted into oblivion and I think the same would happen with a reverse alias, so let alone trying to put hoodie, jackets and sweater into the same definition like that.

That doesn't mean I like the status quo, if we were to have granular searches, we should have color_sweatshirt tags as well, there's no point in distinguish between hoodies and sweatshirts but make color tags for only one of them, I think we should have both or none.

I agree that trying to distinguish between sweatshirt and sweater is a lost fight, just as with the garter tags, there are still some mistags for legwear garter even after gardening, deprecating, making a fully explanatory wiki for this and the other tags and changing its name to something more intuitive, we should expect this about sweatshirts/sweaters as well, since color_sweater tags exists, merging them would solve the forementioned problem.

After seeing that, I started to think that sometimes we have to leave correctness and accuracy aside and embrace reality instead of trying to swim against the tide, unless we had the tagging proccess done by an AI instead of people.

TLDR: maybe we should focus on sweatshirts first and handle hoodies later.
